King Arthur Glastonbury South Cadbury Dunster
Brent Knoll Bath
Somerset
is a perfect place to visit for those interested in
history and culture. Historical buildings, beautiful
countryside, lots of places to visit, and lots of things
to do.
For any and all Arthurian
enthusiasts, the County is home to many interesting
places, which you must visit.
Glastonbury is a
small town at the heart of the
Arthurian story. And
there are many
other places to go and visit.
Dunster, where
Arthur possibly trained as a young man at the court of
King Cadwy at the magnificent castle, in this beautiful
old market town.
Twelve miles north of Taunton and five miles south of
Weston-super-Mare, you can find
Brent Knoll rising
majestically from out of the surrounding Somerset
Levels.
Bath and Wells are both world-class tourist
destinations.
Wookey
home of the famous caves, and near to Cheddar, have an unlikely Arthurian
connection by way of an infamous Witch of Wookey.
Somerset used to be known
as 'Summer Land'.
Much of the Somerset Levels
today are flat and open. Going back to the time of King
Arthur, many of these low lying areas would have been
swampy, or even submerged beneath the sea water.
You
should stand upon the top of Glastonbury Tor,
or other high point such as
South
Cadbury, or
Brent Knoll or any other high place along the
Mendips, and try
imagining what it would have been like when all the
Somerset Levels below were underwater, and could be crossed only
by dangerous narrow causeways and by boat.
This gives
a different perspective on what the area must have
been like in the past, before the Somerset Levels were drained
and banked, and the sea was kept out. Somerset would
then have been a much more significant part of the
country as it would have provided many ancient ports for
trading with other places and peoples.
