Victorian art and craft
had King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and other legendry
characters for subjects. In both of these famous versions of the Lady of
Shallott, by Waterhouse (left) and Hunt (below) we can see how rich a
source of imagery the legends of King Arthur was to the Victorians.
Alfred Tennyson was an important
source for Victorian artists,
as he managed to marry many aspects of the Arthurian legends - honour,
purity, morality, patriotism -in a way which appealed to many of his
contemporaries.
Tennyson also managed to create an
imaginary future for his country which drew continually upon Britain's
past, and, in so doing, he managed to fuse the past, the present and the
future into a national epic myth.
